Home Energy Upgrades

There are a number of ways to plan and manage your home energy upgrade and grant applications. SEAI have three routes or options you can take, which are dependent on what you’re eligible for:

  1. Free Energy Upgrades – For qualifying homeowners in receipt of certain welfare benefits:
  • Fuel Allowance
  • Job-Seekers Allowance for over 6 months and have a child or children under 7
  • Working Family Payment
  • One-Parent Family Payment
  • Domiciliary Care Allowance
  • Carers Allowance and live with the person you are caring for
  • Disability Allowance for over six months and have a child under seven years of age

There are a number of home energy improvements offered as part of this scheme. The upgrades that will be recommended for a property will depend on many things including age, size, type and condition of the property. For each eligible home, an SEAI technical surveyor will determine which upgrades can be installed and funded.

These include:

  • Attic insulation
    • Cavity wall insulation
    • External wall insulation
    • Internal wall insulation

If either one or both of the above are carried out, then you may be eligible for the following:

  • Draught proofing
    • Lagging jackets
    • Energy efficient lighting
    • Energy advice

Also, the following upgrades are recommended occasionally under the scheme:

  • New heating systems
    • Windows

Please note that an SEAI appointed contractor would be allocated to carry out the work for you. This work is covered under the Better Energy Warmer Homes Scheme at no cost to the homeowner.

  • A fully managed solution including grant applications
  • To pay for the works net of eligible grant
  1. Individual Energy Upgrade Grants – For homeowners and landlords who want:
  • Individual energy upgrades
  • To manage their own project
  • To apply for the grant themselves
  • To pay for full cost of works and claim grants afterwards
